![]() Too bad companies founded by the co-members no longer produce similar games and we had to wait until Demon Souls to take it's place.Ī side note, Shadow Warrior (1) actually plays alot like Severance, except it's FPS. but non the less, it's at least 10 years ahead. The game didn't really pick up (company long defunct) probably because internet wasn't common and the game was so ahead of it's time that most folks can't handle hardcore type of games and also bad marketing from the European company and gore wasn't really the thing back then. fights also ends very fast and focus more on close combat as most attacks lacks range. ![]() However it lacks alot in terms of RPG elements with simple level up & no weapon upgrades and very little magic gimmicks (more on elemental weapons). Mechanical feel while Souls has superior visual & sound effects, Severance felt more realistic when you slash an enemy, you get to dismember & decapitate enemies with the right moves (and even use limbs as weapon, something Dead Space partially utilizes) One thing Severance pales is the movement during combat lock that you can't move as freely as in souls and the clunky leaping mechanics. In Severance, i like how you can control where to swing your attacks and it plays an important role in dealing damage since enemies have their weak spots and shields you need to attack the right spot, while Souls is more like pressing attack at the right moment & distance and you deal more damage from behind.īoth games have dodge system while Severance quick step direction is limited it seems to have more fluid dodge+attack, souls focus on dodge + fast tracking attack (less natural). however Souls allow users to delay inputs or release a charge attack early makes it more unpredictable. This means every weapon have their unique special moves you can use to suit the situation, not just combos that needs to be started with a slash. While Soul Series plays more like "Virtua Fighter" when you press certain buttons accordingly to get combos or moves, Blade Of Darkness plays more like "Tekken", where you not just have to press certain buttons but also directional inputs to pull off certain combos. However i still felt it's combat system is pretty superior to most modern 3rd person hack & slash games, sadly, including Soul series. It's been decades since Severance: Blade Of Darkness was made. Ok, so out of the soul series i've only played Demon Souls, Dark Souls & Bloodborne so my views might be wrong.
